Bulgogi is a Korean staple that is great as a standalone dish or combined with a stir-fry, tacos or in a sandwich.
Ingredients:
1 pound thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin)
1 medium-sized onion, thinly sliced
2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
For the Marinade:
1/2 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons mirin (rice wine)
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon grated ginger
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, sesame seeds (if using), and black pepper. Ensure the sugar is fully dissolved.
Slice the Beef: If the beef is not already thinly sliced, cut it into thin slices. This is easier to do when the meat is partially frozen.
Marinate the Beef: Place the sliced beef in a bowl and pour the marinade over it. Make sure the beef is well coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to an hour. For better flavor, you can marinate it in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight.
Heat a pan or a grill over medium-high heat.
Add the marinated beef slices and sliced onions to the pan. Cook for 5-7 minutes or until the beef is cooked through, stirring occasionally.
If you have a grill, you can grill the bulgogi for an authentic smoky flavor.
Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with chopped green onions.
Serve the bulgogi over steamed rice or in lettuce wraps. It's also great with a side of kimchi and pickled vegetables.
